after the good resonance I had yesterday with the Gotthard Live Review I decided to do another one. This time the gig is almost 5 weeks ago but better later than never ;)
I think most of you know this guy: Richie Sambora - guitarist of one of the biggest Rock Bands in the world (for those who don't know: Bon Jovi^^) released after 14 long years his third solo record, called "Aftermath Of The Lowdown". Just this fact was a reason to celebrate. I never thought he would do a solo tour again. But he did - Richie played a sold-out-tour in Europe ... and I was there - in Berlin.
Richie kicks off with "Burn That Candle Down", a straight Rocker, and it was fantastic to see Richie rockin' out, because he couldn't do that for a long, long time with his main band. Everybody knows Bon Jovi have changed a lot since the 90's ... from hair metal/hard rock to pop rock and pop-rock means the guitar solos get shorter and shorter and I think Richie as artist don't like the way everything turned out. On his solo album and tour he was the boss, he could do what he wanted to do - and that is just having fun playing guitar and singing hard rock tunes with a bluesy edge ... and you know what? You hear it in every single note, Richie played at this night. He had so much fun on stage after a long time of trouble and sadness.
He was celebrating a bunch of new songs like "Nowadays", "Sugar Daddy" or "Takin' a Chance on the Wind" and mixed it up with older stuff like "Stranger In This Town" and some cover-songs from Bad Company, The Beatles ... and in fact from Bon Jovi. Classics like "Wanted Dead Or Alive", "These Days" and especially "I'll Be There for you" made the whole crowd sing along.
Seeing Richie singing and playing is always a special thing because he is doing this with so much emotion and passion. In my opinion he is the REAL superstar behind Bon Jovi, he is the better singer and in fact the better musician. Sorry Jon, but that's fact. Richie has done an amazing job on his new album and made a better Longplayer than Bon Jovi did in the last 10 years. With "Seven Years Gone" there is a future classic on it. Jon Bon Jovi would die for writing such an amazing song nowadays. Richie delivers much more creativity and dedication on stage and in the studio.
Any way ... back to the concert: Richie gave us a big gift at the end of the show: he played spontaneously his classic "The Answer" from his first solo record. That was a very special moment, because he hadn't played that song for a loooong time. All ends after two and a half hours with a slow version of Bon Jovi's "Livin' On A Prayer".
In conclusion I have to say that Richie Sambora proved that he is still one of the world's finest guitar players of all time with a very strong and emotional voice. Richie, I hope it won't take you another 14 years to deliver your fourth album ... and tour.
